Ferguson hails “excellent” United

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has described his side’s 4-0 win at Sunderland as one of their best erformances of the season.

Despite missing some key players, including Carlos Tevez, Ryan Giggs and Anderson, the Red Devils made short work of their struggling opponents - establishing a 3-0 lead by half-time through Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha.

A late Saha penalty put the icing on the cake for the Stadium of Light visitors, and afterwards Ferguson was full of praise for his players.

“It was an excellent performance, I thought the passing and movement was excellent,” Ferguson said.

“The first goal put us in the driving seat because we knew Sunderland were going through a bit of a sticky patch.

“It was a marvellous move for the first goal and after that, we did play well.”

Coupled with Arsenal’s goalless draw at Portsmouth, the victory moves defending champions United to the top of the Premier League table.

Meanwhile the Black Cats’ recent slump in form, which has seen them win just once in their last 13 matches, drops Roy Keane’s side to second-from-bottom in the division

Ferguson: West Ham deserved win

A graceful Sir Alex Ferguson admitted West Ham deserved to beat his Manchester United team at Upton Park today.

The Hammers fell behind to an early Cristiano Ronaldo goal and the winger then missed a penalty before West Ham won the game late on through goals from Anton Ferdinand and Matthew Upson.

“We were beaten by a better team I think. I don’t think we measured up to our normal performance,” said Ferguson.

“When that happens, particularly when the team is motivated against you, you are going to get a hard day, and we had a hard day.

“I think we struggled today. They were very competitive and aggressive West Ham and they were always about us, tackling us everywhere.

“Getting the lead, and missing the penalty - that would have killed the game, but I couldn’t see it happening. If you are losing goals from set-pieces, you know you’re not at your best.”

Ferguson’s men are now two points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, after the Gunners won 4-1 at Everton in the day’s late kickoff.

The United manager now hopes his players can bounce back with a win against Birmingham at Old Trafford on New Year’s Day.

He said: “They are human beings and you can’t expect them to be perfect all the time. We had a perfect performance in our last game at Sunderland and this was a disappointment today.

“It’s a great team I’ve got, but we just have to galvanise ourselves. A great reply if you always give a bad performance is to have a good one next time.”

Owen Hargreaves a Bust?

Am I the only one that thinks Manchester United have not only over-paid for Owen Hargreaves, but that they have better options at the position? The Canadian born defensive mid-fielder has made 7 appearances in 14 league games and I can only think of one good game that he’s had — off the top of my head I cannot remember the opponent (perhaps someone can refresh my memory).

Aside from that one game that stood out to me, his performance has been shocking considering the money paid and the expectations coming into the season.

Some questions / things to consider:

* Does Carrick play better with Hargreaves on the bench? I was thinking today how much better Carrick played. He made some very effective passes, moved around well, made himself available, and was a big part of the game. Versus his performance last weekend at Bolton when he was paired with Hargreaves and entirely ineffective.
* Ronaldo has had only two more appearances. Can you say he’s as important to the team as Ronny? On the surface this sounds like an unfair comparison, but think in terms of work-rate and energy expended, and how the team around him plays. Consider his play in his position against any of the regular starters. Does he stack up?
* Does Manchester have a better option at the position? Certainly not Fletcher who was pathetic today, but Anderson would get my vote as a better alternative. A midfield of Ronaldo, Carrick, Anderson, and Giggs (spelled by Nani) would strike fear into most teams.

Now don’t get me wrong, I believe he provides great depth and is a useful player on the roster. My point is that he should not be considered part of the “best 11″ for United and should be utilized as a substitute instead of a starter. What do you think?

Wes Brown: On his way out?

Is Wes Brown at the end of his career or is going to be relieved of his contract with Manchester United. Sir Alex has told media that they are yet to agree on a new deal with the Old Trafford club.

The defender’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season but Ferguson says Brown has rejected one offer already. Brown has joined United in 1996 as a trainee and signed professional papers four months later.

With the contract expiring he will be free to sign with other clubs and would even be allowed to sign a pre-contract agreement with a club outside the Premier League.

Ferguson said: “Nothing has been agreed and that’s entirely up to Wes.

“We’ve had several meetings with his agent and that is difficult as you can imagine - some agents are difficult.”

United would also be faced with the prospect of losing the player, who originally joined the club as a trainee, on a free transfer.

Ferguson the prospect of Brown not being at the club next season is getting closer to becoming a reality. Wes Brown has become the second choice as midfield defender since Vidic made a strong claim on the midfield position.

He said: “It’s a possibility and that would be a disappointment.

“He’s rejected one offer and we feel we’ve made him a good final offer and it really is up to him now. We won’t be going back.”

Although he has found opportunities to play in his favoured position of centre-back limited Brown has made over 270 appearances for United and is currently deputising for the injured Gary Neville at right-back.

Despite not being a first choice player at Old Trafford Brown is unlikely to be short of offers if he decides to leave the club.

Rooney makes wedding plans

With England not playing in next year’s European Championship, Wayne Rooney is planning a honeymoon instead.

The England striker intends to use the involuntary break in June to wed his longtime girlfriend Coleen McLoughlin.

“For a while we couldn’t make any plans because I didn’t know whether I would be playing in Euro 2008,” said the Manchester United star, who has been dating McLoughlin for five years. “But when we failed to qualify, as devastating as that was, we were able to come up with some firm dates.

“Had England got through to the tournament then we would have married later on in the summer but that meant we wouldn’t have had a honeymoon. So I guess there is some upside to it.”

The couple are yet to set a date but has looked at potential venues in Italy, France, Ireland and England.

Rape suspect held after United party.

Police have arrested a 19-year-old man who is suspected of raping a woman at a party thrown for Manchester United players.

Investigations into the Christmas party at Great John Street hotel in the centre of Manchester began yesterday when police revealed they were looking into an incident of alleged sexual assault.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester police said the suspect had turned himself in for questioning and was still in police custody.

Previously it was reported that the entire first team was present at the party except for winger Cristiano Ronaldo. Media sources have reported that the football club’s stars had attended the party after hitting the town in the afternoon.

After visiting a casino earlier in the day, they went to the Old Grapes pub before some of the stars came to the party at the fashionable hotel.

Last night, police revealed that they had been called to the hotel at 04:15 GMT after receiving reports that a 26-year-old had allegedly been raped

Ferguson fines United players

Alex Ferguson has warned his Manchester United players they face the axe if they step out of line again in the aftermath of their Christmas party. United have been at the centre of a series of lurid tabloid headlines since the party and Ferguson says such articles are undermining their efforts to win the Premier League title.

The Scot claims the club is built on foundations of togetherness and that anyone who threatens that could be asked to leave. Rumors are flying high that Sir Alex has imposed a 1 million pound fine to all the players that was involved in the Christmas Party. Man, I love his Scotsman, he’s got balls and I agree with what he has done 100%.He said: “Football has changed but you cannot lose your control. That is why we make changes here at Manchester United when we see anyone interfering with this sense of control.”

With the January transfer window just days away Ferguson could have the opportunity to sell any of those players he thinks are causing trouble. Sir Alex Ferguson has been known to be hard on all his players and have never hesitated to sell his stars, because of ill discipline.

“When we see this, then it’s time for them to go because this club is based on everyone being together,” said the United boss.

“When we start going off at tangents you have to assess it - definitely.”

Ferguson also said he does not like the way modern-day footballers feel they must steal the limelight away from their team-mates, insisting no individual is bigger than the team.

“What annoys me about some players today is this personal glory thing. It’s ugly seeing these kind of celebrations.”

But Ferguson maintains he has no intention of walking away from Old Trafford himself, claiming his current squad is the best he has ever worked with.

Rooney wants to be United’s captain one day!

Well now what do you know off-ankle Wayne Rooney wants to be Manchester United’s captain. He needs to sort out his ankle problems first, what good is a captain on the injury list?

It is not surprising when the 22-year-old, who has been an Old Trafford boy for three years, says he would like to be seen in the same light as Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville. I feel he needs another two years to prove his leadership capabilities. It is one thing to play well, but quite another to be leading your club on the pitch.

“But, as I say, there are still a few people there now who would probably be likely captains so you never know.
“I love playing at United and hopefully one day, if I got chosen to be captain, then it would be a great honour,” he told Sport magazine.

“If I got the chance to be captain of United then I would be delighted with that.” Rooney said.

“I think you play football to win things, to make people happy and to make history,” he continued. “If I can have half of the success that the Busby Babes did at United then I’d be delighted with that. You definitely want to be remembered and not forgotten, so I suppose everybody wants to be a part of history.” Rooney closed off.

Rooney was also heard saying that he wants to be a legend one day that people will remember long after he has gone. He is playing very well this season and if he carries on then he will indeed be revered one day as a true United hero.

United have drawn against Portsmouth again.Its all co-incidence but we keep drawing against Portsmouth.However,considering with other teams we usually draw against A premier team.The last 16 match we had to face Arsenal comparing to what Liverpool and Chelsea managed to get.Though Liverpool didn’t make any rewards out of their game and got themselves out.I am expecting to see Middlesbrough win against Sheffield United.

Apart for this,after giving an inspirational play against Arsenal,Wayne Rooney has been nominated for FA cup awards including Cardiff striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Portsmouth keeper David James, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and Barnsley keeper Luke Steele.

We are surely winning this one and registering our place in Semi’s.Lets hope Chelsea fails to deliver what every ones expecting.Matches are going to be played 8th and 9 th of the march.

Far late result to a UFEA night.I am keen with United winning from back in UFEA matches.I still get those goosebumps that AC milan gave us and we hardly had any chances to recover.Thank God it wasnt going to be that night.

The formation was something that was unusual.A 4-5-1 kinda play(the one we used against the Gunners).Fergie opted for playing with Rooney as a lone striker and 5 midfields.The defense remained unchanged with Brown,Vida,Ferdi and Evra.No big deals in the first half and i was yawning while watching the game.The ground didnt have enough lights or may be the crowd was too placid.Anyways,first half went untouched with a few threats from Benzema and also Rooney giving a few.

Second half was all pumped up for United.The pace and passes went on beautifully in mid-field and a goal for us was expected.Ronaldo had free-kick but was wasted in search hitting ball beneath the wall.Just as we were pressing more on Lyon, it all turned other way round.With a low pass to Benzema at the edge of the box,his visious strike made it through from Van De Sar’s hand and made Lyon’s first goal.It was hard understand how he managed to score with such tight angle and crowded defense.That was gem and a tough goal considering with the scenario.One goal up and hardly 30 minutes left to the game.

Losing here was going to make things bad at home,with threats of Benzema too.If he could have injured himself it still could have been better,but damn he was substituted on 83 minute.Before that Nani,Hargreaves and Tevez were brought in with a desperate search for the late. United gave their whole heart and every little game plan they had in their head.The constant attack was making vulnerable for the Lyon wall and then it finally payed off.The cross delievered by Nani was deflected in by Fred and guided to Tevez, who with acres of spaces guided the ball into the nets.

United sneaked pass through a tough test.A defeat could have spoiled the place in quarters.OT has been United successful venue in UFEA games so that wont bother us.

I wasn’t in mood for writing this but a few of them were required.Let me start first one with EPL.

Arsenal defeated BlackBurn at Emirates and so now they are 5 points clear.Right now they are at the top with 63 points as we stand second with 58 points.Arsenal are the strongest contender for this year’s Premier Triumph and Diaby(some Arsehole) has also said that they are sure of knocking United out of the title race.Yeah Yeah how many times have we heard this. Its now Do or Die Situation for United.If we lose any forth coming or even draw we are making matters worse for ourselves.While below ur butt,Chelsea and Liverpool made no improvement so the table standings remained unchanged.

Now with finances as United is always linked with money.United has slipped behind Real Madrid in the race of richest club in world.United is second followed by Barca.This news however doesn’t make any sense to us why we are second richest.We are already in debt and we are making our boys to play pointless matches instead of giving them rest.How can they say that we are richest?Also Chelsea who are known for dumb acts and losing money are standing 5th.Read more about this here

Now with players.Rodrigo Possebon is likely to start for United in match against Rovers.With looks of Sir Solskjaer we surely are awaiting of some messiah to take us out from this hell time that we are going by.Lets hope something from him and may he work out well.
Well thats how everything ended.Apart from all of this shit there was some stupid poll going comparing who is better Cristiano Ronaldo or George Best?I possibly think its George Best cause he was never fined for Text messaging anyone.Yeah Ronaldo got fined for messaging someone during training and no one knows who he was mailing.But who cares if he plays good.

It hasn’t been the first that United are making their trips to different parts of country for campaigning and advertising United.This time we move to South Africa in a three way club tournament starting from July 19 to July 26. United knows that rest is what every player right now is craving and its only our club who is suffering from this.While other players were having a nap or playing in snow or lads were running in those sands of Arabia for nothing but money.Those matches have indeed paid us a lot after watching United squaring at White Lane Park.Many people didn’t realize what was going wrong in that game.It wasn’t that Spurs players were running fast but our men running too slow.The point i am making here is that why does United need to campaign or increase their marketing.Playing good games and winning those itself is a way to increase your popularity.The excuse here is that this will bring out new talents and will provide a platform to the rising star.Yeah,it may be but playing with three teams doesn’t create any new opportunities for new players.As such the teams Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando pirates have their reputations.They have already exported a lot of their players around the globe which makes no sense. Well i don’t know how much will United make out of this one but their recent trip to Saudi earned us a reported 1million pounds.

Losing with 2 goals,againt Manchester City and that too on the week of Busby Babes Anniversary.What bad can u ask.

Just poor performance.The match was against our rivals and no other clubs.It was after all Manchester City.The team for whom i would have never enjoyed playing.It was a derby day and the day that we remembered our heroes who lost their precious lifes in a disasterous Munich crash.No better day to get motivated.Even their T-shirts they wore didnt recieve what they had to.Nothing went right for us that day except for that minute silence which even City fans respected. The play by United was by far the most weakest one.City looked for stronger and pacey compared to United for every occasion.Rooney’s absence and Ronny playing is position was a bad one.This is what going wrong with United.Ronaldo’s ability to score goal doesn’t officially make him striker.Its the wing which makes him strong and moving him from there makes a bad choice.Also playing Giggs was too a bad choice.He was lacking in every occasion.He hardly was able move with Anderson’s pace which was all keeping United behind.I wont comment any more with team after putting such performance.Carrick was the only player who was able to get us a consolation goal except for that United had no high-lights. The defense was messy especially O’Shea and Ferdinand.Inaccuracy in passes and with the pressure they were playing was seen on every occasion.Well to also applaud City who actually deserved more than us.It was their commitment and the thirst to win this one made that possible for them.I am really pissed with this one and it doesn’t matter how much i write on this one.But you can read what was the actual reason for United’s bad performance from our future Coach Carlos Quieroz.

Heinze Desperate For His Future?

Heinze and Liverpool have called the help of the Premier League to resolve the move of the Argentinian player to the Merseyside club. The hearing is finding place on August, 20th, some days before the transfer window closes. But as if all this wasn’t negative enough yet, Heinze has seen the need to publicly hit out at SAF and ManU.

I want a quick solution. My lawyers have told me a meeting with the Premier League is possible to advance the matter next week…

Funny (and good) thing in sports is that things can change fast. We are only two games in the season further, and already Mr. Terry needs to be corrected.

Sorry, Mr. Terry, but we are actually standing above you, with the same number of points, but a better goal difference.

And with Sunday’s upcoming clash against Chelsea F.C., at OT, things can only get better for us, as it seems we finally found our winning spirit back and I bet that Wednesday’s Champions League game the prove of this will be. I probably will be live-reporting the game again.

A night to be remembered

A heavy night of bookings and tension we still dont forget our babes-busby babes who lost their immortal souls in the Munich plane crash.

The babes were those selected players of Busby who had almost conquered every title in every scenario winning with any fears to all extend.This was the 50th aniverssarey of Munich crash and to miss this one would be our worst sins.

Well apart from that United had a staggering 7 bookings of Game with few no so sure to be given.We are surely going to be fine by FA for this one.Wayne Rooney is going to miss his Derby match against City after he crosses 5 bookings and he also has to pay a heavy fine.

I am still not pleased with the last night and i hope it washes out of our brains quickly.

Do we need Manucho for now ?

After last match against Spurs United looked pretty shitty and was struggling at forwards.This season looking with the stats and scores none of the strikers has succeed in scoring consistent goals expect for Tevez.Rooney hasn’t been in his best touches and Saha hardly playing this season it looks as if we are going to end this season with just one striker.

With our this season’s only buy Manucho he moved to Greek club Greek club Panathinaikos after Fergie confirmed his loan move.SAF thinks that he still needs time to settle few things and till then Manucho can play at Greece and return with the new season.Well after watching the Spursy match i wasn’t at all amused to see our lads for not scoring.With droughts up-front and having hardly any strikers it was ought to happen.Ronaldo was moved for this reason in center and Rooney aside but that too didn’t help us out.This also made Ronaldo invisible as that wasn’t his natural position. Apart from this Saha is too injured(or dunno what) is out this season and i doubt his return will go well with us. With times like this was it feasible to give up Manucho and think to get him started next season?I did watch the African cup of Nations .For many reasons i think they have improved almost in every field and are going to stand as a strong contenders in WC in next coming years.Apart from this Manucho has been brilliant.Almost scoring for every match he is building a reputation of a target man.

Lets hope that United hang on till end of this year with two strikers and Ronaldo keeps on scores coming.

My prediction has already gone wrong for now and i still dont know how bad it will go.Tottenham are right now 2 of the better teams.With fair amount of chances and one goal from Berbatov(with little help of Lennon and Jenas’s Left hand).

We have already recieved three yellow cards- Ronaldo,Van De Sar and Brown.Well still hoping to recover.

I will keep you informed for further actions here.

PS: United levels the game after Tevez scores on 93 minute.How about that.Sure we lost the point but it was all worth.I have a lot to talk on this one.

Foster Comeback Delayed Until March

The promising young keeper damaged his knee in the summer and despite undergoing corrective surgery in June, he is still a ways away from being available as an alternative for first-choice keeper Edwin Van Der Sar.

“It’s going to take time with Ben,” admitted Ferguson. “The prognosis of the specialist is that we should see him back in March.

“It’s difficult for him but you have to handle it. It will definitely add to his experience.”
No one will be more frustrated at the slow rate of recovery than Foster, 24, who is yet to play a single game for United since returning from his two-year loan at Watford.

The latest news from the infirmary concerning team skipper Gary Neville is considerably better, however, and the defensive veteran could be back in action as early as next week after a grueling ten months on the sidelines.

“Gary will play in the reserves against Everton on Wednesday,” Ferguson added.

“After that, we’ll have a clearer idea of what to do in the next few games, including the one in Saudi.”

Manchester United have a friendly lined up against Saudi powerhouse Al Hilal in Riyadh on 21st January.

Manchester United are placed right on top of the log in the Champions League group F after a late Cristiano Ronaldo goal earned United a 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon.

The Portuguese captain’s injury-time free-kick deprived his former club of a point after a battling effort that had the hosts struggling for much of the match.

On his return to the starting line-up Ronaldo soon reminded Sir Alex Ferguson of what he had been missing with a neat back-heel that unlocked Sporting’s defense but was squandered by Louis Saha. I wonder if his recent injury is still in the back of his mind.

However the visitors took the lead on 21 minutes when a speculative effort from Abel crept at Tomas Kuszczak’s near post.

They looked good value for their advantage for the remainder of the half as they restricted United to attempts from distance and quietened an expectant Old Trafford crowd.

The introduction of Carlos Tevez and Ryan Giggs revitalised the home attack after the interval and on the hour the diminutive Argentinean claimed the final touch that took Ronaldo’s shot past a helpless Rui Patricio. Now remind me again why Tevez did not start the game?

Sporting’s backline came under a barrage of United attacks for the final third of the match with Ronaldo and substitute Owen Hargreaves both coming close before the dramatic climax.

Munich air disaster - 50th anniversary: United make a hash of preparations.

Manchester United supporters have been angered by the club's insensitivity at the unveiling of a huge image of the Busby Babes which adorns virtually the whole of Old Trafford East stand facade. The image has been erected as this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster in which eight of the Busby Babes lost their lives.

In an age where sponsors logos appear just about everywhere, the club took the somewhat controversial decision to include their main sponsors logo alongside the famed photo of the Busby Babes team line-up which was taken before a European Cup tie in Belgrade in February 1958 just prior to the air crash.

I'm not giving the sponsor yet more publicity by naming them here, but the irony is that in protesting about the point they have received a lot more publicity than perhaps they might have done otherwise, though it is publicity of the sort than any half decent organisation would not want, given the gross insensitivity of this error of judgement. United have effectively put a sponsors name on a memorial. It's a bit like including a sponsors logo on a grave stone. You simply would not do it.

As if including the sponsors name wasn't bad enough, the club also managed to get the words wrong in the famous Manchester United Calypso song which has been sung by the fans throughout the last five decades in memory of the Babes. To their credit the club have agreed to amend the wording which should read "...bunch of bouncing Busby Babes".

However, the club have stated that they see nothing wrong with including the sponsors name in this memorial tribute, this speaks volumes about the people who run Manchester United.

The lousy local rag that is the Manchester Evening News is also cashing in on the anniversary by producing a special supplement, you do wonder where the profits of this venture will end up, no doubting in the coffers of the paper's owners.

Meanwhile, the official Manchester City supporters club have sent a letter to United asking if prior to the badly timed derby at Old Trafford rather than have a minute's silence, fans should applaud the disaster. You do not applaud disasters, it is as simple as that and City fans will, for once, have to behave themselves. United should not be dictated to by numpties who have no sense of respect, decency or history. It is so bad that Man City fans have had to be reminded by their own club by letter than one of their own Frank Swift perished in the crash.

In repsonse to the request a spokesman for United said "It's a solemn event."
He added: "We don't think applause is the best way to commemorate the death of 23 people."

Manchester City supporters have a long history of letting their club and Manchester down when the two sides meet by mocking the 1958 disaster. Let us hope that for once sense prevails on February 10th when the two sides clash.

Bizarre: Man City and Newcastle make it a week not to forget

Last week Manchester City shocked just about everyone with the goings on at Bramall Lane, but few should have been that surprised at the result.

However, FA Cup ties against the likes of Sheffield United away are rarely easy - the Blades have knocked out the Red Devils in the not too distant past. But losing because of a bunch of balloons could only happen to City, surely?

Perhaps the biggest question of all is what were the City fans doing taking balloons to a Championship club in the first place? Visiting fans, had according to at least one City supporter on fan site www.Blueview.co.uk embarrassed the club: "In taking balloons to Sheffield, we looked like a non-league club on our big day out".

As if the sight of Michael Balloon, sorry Ball, wasn't bizarre enough came the news that Dennis Wise was to join Keegan at Newcastle. Surely nobody outside of Mike Ashley's inner circle would have dreamt that could ever happen?

Keegan wasted no time in showing who is going to be the boss when he made it clear that the former Leeds manager will report to him. This double-act could turn out to be like watching the Krankies in Panto... "he's behind you Kev". The show must go on and on...

Ronaldo shines as the big selection debate resurfaces

United returned to action last night when Portsmouth were the visitors to Old Trafford, the Reds needed to win to go back to the top of the table after Arsenal had regained pole position the night before.

From the start of last night's encounter, Ronaldo looked very much up for it, the Portuguese winger had been controversially sent off when the two sites met at Fratton Park earlier on this season in a game that finished 1-1.

For the first 15 minutes in particular Ronaldo looked like a man on a mission, he was at the centre of everything which was good about the Red Devils attacks, so it came as no surprise that on ten minutes he opened the scoring with a brilliant goal. The Reds top goal-scorer linked up with Nani on the left, first he cushioned the ball with his chest back to his compatriot who returned the ball into space behind a Portsmouth defender, Ronaldo ran onto the ball picked his spot and placed his shot underneath the body of England 'keeper David James.

Three minutes later United who were swarming all over the visitors like a red rash, were awarded a free-kick twenty five yards from the Pompey goal, up stepped Ronaldo who blasted the ball up and over the wall and into the top corner giving James no chance again, the Portsmouth keeper never even moved, the ball was hit so hard he wouldn't have even seen it until it hit the rigging.

At that point in the game, fans will no doubt have been thinking this could turn out to be a cricket score, as the Reds link-up play had been first class. Portsmouth for their part were rocking and one or two of their players could have been forgiven for looking for any metaphorical port in a storm.

However, as the game went on and despite United continuing to create chances and dominating the game, too many players in Red shirts played the wrong ball as the Reds play became over intricate.

At half time Harry Redknapp made a couple of changes and the visitors improved second half, but it did not alter the general pattern of the game with United dominating and creating the better chances. Rooney who didn't have one of his better games was guilty of poor finishing on more than one occasion.

Scholes, Carrick, Park and Nani had started the game in preference to Tevez, Anderson, Hargreaves and Giggs.

Scholes, who played well, was replaced by Anderson on 62 minutes, the latter went to be arguably alongside Ronaldo the stand out player on the night. While Scholes plays clever incisive balls to feet, Anderson works like a Trojan and covers the ground like a March Hare. The former Porto star's introduction and the performance that followed will have no doubt have given Fergie an awful lot to think about this week prior to the Reds next game when they face Spurs in North London.

On the evidence of last night, Anderson seems to be fine about being left out, the Old Trafford fans have started to sign his name too, which is always a good sign that things are going well. But it remains to be seen how Fergie will keep all of his stars happy.

Tevez, when he eventually came on for Rooney on 73 minutes had the look of a brooding cave-man, but as ever, he gave his all in the cause of winning for United.

Hargreaves for his part, one suspects will be just happy to be playing his part after such an injury ravaged season. The former Bayern midfield player replaced Ronaldo on 73 minutes, he was introduced as an insurance policy to ensure victory.

Against Pompey Fergie had appeared to give Ronaldo a free role at the expense of leaving out Tevez, with the largely ineffective Park filling in for the Portuguese winger on the right. The burning question is what will Ferguson do for the remainder of the season? Will the United manager go for the legs, skill and industry of Anderson or will he opt for the silky skills of Scholes? Will Fergie start with both of them by deploying just Rooney up front - many Reds fans, and me included, believe that this is the worst of all options.

Graeme Sounnes said at the beginning of the season that he thinks that Fergie does not know what his best team is. If that is true, and I for one agree with the former Rangers manager, then Reds fans will hoping that the manager solves this puzzle and comes up with the right team for the bigger challenges that lie ahead.

Manchester United visit: Poor planning on FAM’s part

IT is regrettable to see the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) in a fix over its decision to go ahead with the proposed visit by the Manchester United football team here in July.

Surely the FAM, having signed the contract — Organisation Association Agreement — which states that no match can be held during the Asian Cup on July 7-29 and three days after, should not have invited or agreed to the English Premier League team’s visit during those dates? To justify the visit on the grounds of it being Visit Malaysia Year 2007, is even more preposterous. FAM could have planned the team’s visit well outside the Asian Cup dates, if it wanted the visit to coincide with Visit Malaysia Year. What happened here is that a lack of planning and foresight on FAM’s part has put it on a collision course with the Asian Football Confederation. There is no doubt that many Malaysians want to see MU in action here, more so during VMY 2007 as it would give a boost to the tourism programme. But we seem to end up doing the right thing for the wrong reason. We believe the Malaysian public had, before this MU row surfaced, spoken enough on the performance of the FAM. What has now transpired only reaffirms what the public has been saying all this while.

Wes praises Blues gesture

Reds defender Wes Brown has thanked Chelsea for the guard of honour that welcomed United onto the Stamford Bridge pitch.

When Chelsea were crowned champions in 2005, they were applauded onto the pitch at Old Trafford, and Brown says the reciprocated gesture was a sign of respect.

"It was great for Chelsea to do that for us," he told Sky Sports. "We did it for them [when they were champions in 2005]. It shows great respect between the two teams."

Brown was impressive at the heart of United's defence in a 0-0 draw, in which he praised the makeshift Reds side Sir Alex named.

"It was a difficult game for us," he added. "Both sides didn't play their strongest teams, but we have come out with a respectable draw.

"It was [a strange game]. There was a few lads in from the reserves and some players played out of position. We've not played together all season, so to come to Chelsea we had to play well. I thought we relly stuck together.

"Chelsea put a lot of pressure on us towards the end of the game. It looked like they might nick a goal at the end, but we managed to hold on and kept on defending."

Brown clinched his fourth Premiership winners' medal with the title success this season and says this is one of the most satisfying.

"This one ranks highly for me," he said. "We've not won it for a few seasons, but we've got a team together now that looks very strong, young and talented.

"We've played well all season, starting off strongly and carrying it on from there. We all bonded and we knew that

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes his team's push for a third Premiership title is being undermined by decisions in favour of Manchester United.

Mourinho, speaking after his team's goalless draw at Newcastle, claimed Middlesbrough were denied a clear penalty at Old Trafford on Saturday.

"The circumstances are difficult for us with the new football rules that we have to face," said Mourinho.

"It is not possible to have a penalty against Manchester United."

Middlesbrough's Lee Dong-Gook appeared to be fouled by John O'Shea in the final minute of their 1-1 draw with United at Old Trafford - but a penalty was not awarded.

In United's previous game, Sheffield United were denied a spot-kick when Gabriel Heinze brought down Luton Shelton.

Wayne Rooney claims United's fortunes as a team are more important to him than his own goalscoring record.

The striker, who has scored 16 goals this term, has come under an intense media spotlight for his sporadic record in front of goal, but he claims he is far from worried by his form.

"We are top of the League at the moment so I'm not really worried," he told MUTV. "We are playing well and scoring goals - the team is scoring goals, so that doesn't concern me.

"If I was missing chances and it cost us points, of course it would be a problem. But we are winning all our games, so it doesn't deter me.

"People have been scoring and the defence has been brilliant as well. I want to play well. As a footballer you want to be the best and want to win. I'm the same - I want to win and hate to lose, but I think all the players in the dressing room will say that."

The 21-year-old striker has openly aimed to better his goalscoring exploits each term, and he is just four goals short of doing just that with well over a month of the campaign remaining.

"I have always said I want to improve on my previous goal tally," he said. "I scored 19 last season and I'm just looking to beat that really and do well for the team."

Sir Alex: Crowd was crucial

Sir Alex hailed the fans' role in United's come-from-behind victory against Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford.

A Premiership record 76,098 supporters were on hand to witness a stunning second-half performance that saw the Reds run out eventual 4-1 winners. But even with the scores level at 1-1, the United boss said he never doubted the result.

Sir Alex told MUTV: "They overcame being 1-0 down, they kept making chances, kept their nerve, showed their composure and the fans were fantastic. The culmination was just too powerful for Blackburn.

"Paul Scholes' [equalising goal] won us the game, in a sense. The crowd were always going to take us over the line after that. The fans were magnificent, the best in years."

The Reds trailed at half-time, but never panicked in their pursuit of an equaliser.

"All they have to do is keep their nerve," the United manager said. "The players kept making chances and showed composure. Cristiano Ronaldo: some of his football today was out of this world.

"And Ryan Giggs, Ji-sung Park… the front players were also fantastic. The combination

Michael Carrick insists United have rediscovered top form at the perfect time, just as the Premiership season reaches its final stages.

The England midfielder bagged the all-important second goal as United came from behind to beat Blackburn at Old Trafford and maintain their six-point lead in the title race.

"We're playing some great stuff," he told MUTV. "We're back to top form after a few weeks where we weren't so good. We've kept on winning, which is the key.

"Whether we've played well or badly in the next few games, as long as we're winning we'll get the job done."

Matt Derbyshire's opener for Rovers meant United trailed at half-time, but a rip-roaring display after the interval yielded goals from Carrick, Paul Scholes, Ji-sung Park and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Carrick played an unfortunate part in Rovers' opener as he inadvertantly forced Edwin van der Sar into a fine save, but Derbyshire converted the rebound from close range.

"Their goal was a bit scrappy from our point of view," he admitted. "I was at full stretch, I had to go for the ball and it's just come off Edwin and suddenly you're 1-0 down.

"You think 'here we go', but we stuck at it and in the second half we played some great stuff. Obviously we thoroughly deserved to win the game but it was nice to score a few goals as well."

The summer signing from Tottenham was happy with the Reds' patience and faith that their fine play would eventually reap tangible dividends.

"We were playing so well, and when you're playing like that you don't want opportunities to slip by. So we were really determined to get three points and I think that showed the way we played second half.

We didn't get frustrated and start lumping it, we kept passing it, creating chances and thankfully they went in."

Carrick viewed Scholes' 60th-minute equaliser as the game's turning point, and explained the celebrations which greeted his goal as sheer relief that victory was in sight.

"Once you get one it gives you a massive lift," he said. "We came out second half and went right at them. You just hope for that first one to come sooner rather than later. Scholesy's bit of brilliance put us well on our way and then after that it was a matter of how many we could score.

"There was a lot of relief, to be fair. The longer it goes, the more impatient you become and once we got that we knew we were on our way to victory then. You've seen the lads celebrating, we went a bit mad! But after that we were comfortable."
